Environmental News - Survey illustrates business’ changing attitude to the environment.

The attitude of UK small to medium sized enterprises towards the environment is changing for the better according to latest annual Environment Agency survey.

The NetRegs website, run by the Environment Agency, canvasses approximately 4,500 small and medium sized businesses to assess the environmental issues they face. Since it was first undertaken in 2003, the survey has demonstrated the changing attitude of businesses to the environment, none more so than over the past 2 years.

The survey has found that 48% of businesses stated that they had introduced practical measures to reduce environmental harm, an increase of 17% on 2005. It also found that 40% of businesses stated that they had an environmental policy in place, up from 26% in 2005. The number of businesses with an Environmental Management System in place increased from 6% in 2005 to 15% in 2007.

The primary driver for businesses to address environmental issues was through a general concern for the environment. However, while only 15% of businesses considered that they undertook activities that could cause harm to the environment, when prompted with a list of activities, this figure rose to 49%. This reflects the low levels of awareness within some enterprises as does the fact that 50% of businesses would like more information on environmental issues.
