Environmental News - Government publishes the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (Amendment) Regulations 2007.

The UK Governement has published the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (Amendment) Regulations 2007.
These Regulations amend the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006 which transpose the main provisions of Council Directive 2002/96/EC of 27th January 2003 on waste electrical and electronic equipment . The main changes are as follows:
- The counting and evidencing of whole appliances for reuse - this clarifies the position on creating re-use evidence.
- The issuing of evidence of WEEE to the nearest kg - i.e. three decimal points of a tonne. Currently, evidence can only be issued to the nearest tonne, which is creating problems for small collections of WEEE (e.g. Fluorescent tubes etc).
- The right for a final holder of WEEE from private households to return it into the system free of charge (FOC)- this gives repair workshops the right to get their WEEE processed FOC.
- An extension of the deadline when evidence for the previous compliance period can be issued to the 30th April - this gives longer for the recycling part of the evidence to be gained for WEEE sent for treatment towards the end of a year.
- Secretary of State prescribing the format for distributor records - this just allows BERR to clarify the format that retailers should use for promoting WEEE recycling.
