New rules for landfilled waste

In order to meet waste acceptance criteria as defined within the Landfill Directive, the UK Environment Agency has announced two important changes will happen on October 30 2007. The new requirements are:
• non-hazardous waste must be treated before landfilling and
• non-hazardous liquid waste will be banned from landfills.
This brings the requirements for non-hazardous waste in line with with those are already in place for hazardous waste. These have helped protect the environment by reducing the pollution potential of hazardous waste and the amount that goes to landfill.
The Landfill Directive was implemented with a view to reducing the reliance on Landfill Sites in the UK and minimising their negative environmental impacts. In order to meet the requirements of the ban, waste producers are advised by the environment agency to take full responsibility for the waste produced and minimise the amounts of liquid waste produced wherever possible. The requirement to treat waste is perhaps the hardest to achieve. Waste must be treated in order to minimise the volume and or impact of waste when sent to landfill.
